IRVINGTON—Town council members on November 8 discussed proposed amendments to Irvington’s charter.
Council member Wayne Nunnally presented the amendments as drafted by town attorney Nancyellen Keane.
We’ve had the opportunity through a very competent legal assistant to review our past. Like so many things that were passed years ago, the charter needs to be updated,” said Nunnally. “The updates that we have to make are really just housekeeping, there is no substantive change.”
The council has been under the impression that terms for elected officials begin in September; however, the charter says terms are to begin in July, he said.
We’ve been operating on the assumption that the mayor only votes when it comes to ties but the charter is silent, so he can either vote or not vote. In accordance with our history, we are amending it to say the mayor only votes when it comes to ties and to show that terms begin in July,” he said.
