Iva M. Benson

YPSILANTI, MICH—Iva M Benson of Ypsilanti, Mich., formerly of Kilmarnock, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2022, at the age of 97.

She was the daughter of Carl M. and Clara L. Watling. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. “Pete” Benson Sr.; a grandchild, Tammy B. Jett; and two son-in-laws, James E. Gordon and Walter J. “George” Nott Jr.; two brothers, Nelson and Carl “Jake” Watling; and a sister, Jean McCulligh.

 She retired from Safeway in 1987 and in 2002, moved back to Michigan to be close to her siblings and her oldest daughter, Diane.

 Mom had a good sense of humor and an infectious laugh that would make everyone in the room laugh with her. She was a loved and dedicated mom and grandma who loved spending time with family. She enjoyed helping out in any way she could. She was a member of the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church and an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Ypsilanti.

 She is survived by her five children; a special daughter, Diane M. Burris (Scott), who always made sure she had everything she wanted and needed along with ensuring she was being well taken care of; Raymond B. “Butch” Benson Jr. (Lynn), Linda B. Gordon, Rebecca B. “Becky” Nott and William C. “Billy” Benson (Elsa); 12 grandchildren, Tonya Burris, a special granddaughter, Tesha Harding (Mike), who visited her often with treats in tow, Christopher “Chris” Benson, Kimberly “Kim” Benson (Brian), Matthew “Matt” Benson (Shauna), Walter “Tre” Nott III (Christina), Ashly Armstead, Meaghan Allshouse (Chris), Raymond “Ray” Benson (Jen), Jeffrey “Jeff” Benson (Katelyn), Stephanie Benson; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Heater and Patricia Sancrant; and a special sister-in-law, Ruby Abbott.

A service for Iva M. Benson, 97, of Ypsilanti, MI, formerly of Kilmarnock, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Kilmarnock United Methodist Church. 89 East Church Street, Kilmarnock. Mrs. Benson died January 18, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Research Institute, 29 Broadway, Floor 4, New York, NY 10006–3111.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
