Jo Anne K. Mason

URBANNA—Jo Anne Kinkead Mason of Urbanna died Sunday, September 3, 2017, with her children by her side.

She was born July 19, 1934, to the late Thelma Virginia Ruckman Kinkead and Thomas Carlyle Kinkead of Dayton.

Mrs. Mason graduated from Dayton High School in 1951. She married the late Robert Donald Mason on August 29, 1953, who predeceased her on April 12, 1995. They initially made their home in Dayton and in 1966, they moved to Urbanna with their three children.

Mrs. Mason was employed briefly as clerk of the Town of Urbanna. She retired in April 2017 at the age of 82, having worked as a bookkeeper at Marshall’s Drug Store for more than 42 years.

She was a faithful member of Dayton United Methodist Church and later Urbanna United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Mason was an avid reader and a fan of “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” Since her retirement, she developed an interest in “The Price is Right” and “Let’s Make a Deal.”

She was proud of the fact that she never pursued a driver’s license. However, she was quick to reprimand others for their shortcomings behind the wheel.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca Mason Trobaugh (H.B. Bibble) of Bridgewater, Robert Mason Jr. of Kilmarnock and Karen M. Owens (James) of Disputanta; grandchildren, Crystal T. Dale (Rick), Jamie C. Owens, Elizabeth Owens Orlando (Zach), Mason L. Owens and Robert J. Owens; and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Murphy, Shelby and Cooper Dale.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her siblings Donald Kinkead, Wanda K. Price and Robert Kinkead.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 8, at Johnson Funeral Service Inc. Chapel, 208 South Main Street, Bridgewater. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, 3289 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 7, at Johnson Funeral Service Inc. Chapel, 208 South Main Street, Bridgewater.

A memorial service will be held in Urbanna at a later date.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers to consider memorial donations to The Friends of Belle Isle State Park, P.O. Box 633, Lancaster, VA 22503 (for Music by the River); or a charity of one’s choice.
