John “Aubrey” Henry

REEDVILLE—John “Aubrey” Henry, 98, of Reedville, died peacefully February 5, 2022, in Burlington, N.C.  

He was the son of James Bester and Theora Digmon Henry of Alabama. He served as an officer in the Navy in World War II and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1947. 

He worked in manufacturing and for an engineering consulting firm before joining the Albemarle Paper Company of Richmond in 1957. He worked in the paper industry 26 years in Virginia, Minnesota and North Carolina. In 1983, he retired as administrative manager of a paper mill in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.

After retiring, Mr. Henry became a realtor for several years, before moving to Fleeton Point. Mr. Henry became very active with the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum when it received the skipjack, Claud W. Somers. He co-chaired the restoration committee of that boat with Wendell Haynie, and was later elected president of The Greater Reedville Association/Reedville Fishermen’s Museum. 

He was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Fleeton, and served on its vestry as junior warden.

He was married to Martha Starnes, a teacher from North Carolina in 1952. She passed on in 2017. They have two sons, John A. Henry Jr., Joseph Starnes Henry and four grandchildren.

He will be buried beside his wife in Hickory, N.C. in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice.
