LANCASTER—John W. “J. W.” McNeal Jr., 81, of Lancaster passed away on December 13, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allean P. and John W. McNeal Sr.; and a sister, Ethel M. Whitacre.
He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia M. Clark of St. Stephens Church and Linda M. McNeal of Richmond; and nieces, Clarissa G. Whitacre of Towson, Md., and Carla W. Mayer of Wheaton, Ill.
He was a 1958 graduate of Lancaster High School, a 1960 graduate of Smithdeal-Massey Business College and a 1961 graduate of the U. S. Army Finance School.
He was a U. S. Army veteran where he served with the Comptroller’s Office at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and Development & Proof Services at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Following his military service, he was employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, Richmond, where he retired from the Department of Health after 27 years of service and enjoyed golfing and travel during his retirement.
“J. W. ” was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and field trialing throughout the United States and Canada.
He was a member of Kilmarnock Baptist Church, American Legion Post 86, VFW Post 7167, Lancaster Moose Lodge, National Rifle Association, Rappahannock Pistol and Rifle Club, Labrador Retriever Club, Bird Dog Foundation, Mary Ball Washington Museum, Morattico Waterfront Museum and various conservation organizations.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 17, at Kilmarnock Baptist Church with interment in Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, Alfonso. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
