Johnson appointed to interim term on Northumberland board

HEATHSVILLE—Following a closed session discussion on Thursday, September 14, Maurice Johnson of Reedville was appointed, 3-1, as interim supervisor for District 5 on the Northumberland board of supervisors.

Richard Haynie, Thomas Tomlin and James Brann voted in favor, James Long voted against. The seat, vacated with the death of Ronnie Jett last month, is up for election this year. Gayle H. Sterrett and Charles “Chip” Williams IV are both on the ballot.

Tomlin said the decision was made because they “didn’t want to give preference to one candidate versus another,” noting that Sterrett was the other applicant. Sterrett said she was “perfectly wonderful” with the decision. “I think it would be great.”

Johnson and his wife, Cheryl, purchased property in Reedville in 2012 with plans to retire. He did just that after 20 years working as….
