KILMARNOCK—Julia Columbia Hill “Sook” Mattocks of Kilmarnock died February 24, 2020.
She was born December 15, 1937 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to the late Robert Hill and Julia Columbus Smith Hill. The family relocated to Kilmarnock when she was 5.
Sook was educated in Lancaster County schools. She was a member of New St. John Baptist Church, Kilmarnock, where she was a deaconess and on the missionary ministry.
Sook raised her children as a stay-at-home mom, and later worked at The Tides Lodge, Morning Star Health Care and Rappahannock General Hospital, where she retired.
She is survived by her children, William “Pee Wee” Smith, Julius Mattocks, Frankie Mattocks, Tanya M. Ritchie, Cynthia M. Tiggle, Michael Mattocks, Stacey M. Scott, Eric Mattocks and Dean Mattocks; 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held February 29 at New St. John Baptist Church, Kilmarnock, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
