WEEMS—June Nichols Dashiell Higgins, 94, of Weems was ushered peacefully into heaven to be with our Lord on December 18, 2016.
A faithful wife and mother, June was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Dr. Richard Higgins; and stepson, Richard Higgins.
She is survived by her first husband, George Easley Dashiell; daughter, Suzanne Dashiell Sylvestro and son-in-law, Tony Sylvestro; daughter, Sallie Easley Dashiell; stepson, Glenn Higgins; stepdaughters, Sue Ann Higgins and Wendy Higgins; grandchildren, Julian Rosario Sylvestro and wife, Hallie Sylvestro; Sarah Ann Richard and fiancé, Marin Runje, and Lillie Suzanne Richard and fiancé, Erik Schneider.
June was raised in South Amboy, N.J., and Suffolk. As a young girl in the mid 1930s, her mother owned and operated a tourist home and her father was a photographer and portrait painter. Those influences were apparent as June was known for her hospitality and lovely homes as well as her artistic abilities.
As a young woman in the 1940s, she worked in Richmond for Dementi Studios as a studio photographer. While living in the Washington, D.C. area, she volunteered using her artistic touch at the Washington Toy and Doll Museum.
In 1986, she moved to the Northern Neck, began painting and became a member of the Rappahannock Art League. She served as a volunteer at Rappahannock General Hospital for over 20 years.
June’s children remember her as one who loved giving parties and encouraging friends and family to visit their home—the door was always open. Young at heart with a sense of humor, she was loved by people of all ages and a blessing to those who knew her.
A memorial service and reception will be held at a date to be announced.
Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, handled the arrangements.
