Kane gains stride on school record

Lancaster High School sophomore distance runner Matthew Kane is closing in on a half-century old school record.

Kane ran the 1600 meter in 4:31.69 last Saturday when assistant coach James Timm took three LHS runners to the Kellie Wells Classic Invitational at James River High School.

“That time puts Mike Umphlett’s 55-year-old mile record in reach,” said Timm.

Umphlett’s record, set in 1968, is 4:31.2. He ran a “true mile,” said Timm.

It’s worth noting, the 1600 is .994 of a mile.

Kane’s time at the invitational was good enough for a seventh….
