Knights Run Road could be next to open following repairs

Crews oversee the installation of two new 72-inch drainage pipes on Knights Run Road.

FREDERICKSBURG—Repair work continues to restore state-maintained roads in the Northern Neck that sustained severe damage during Tropical Storm Michael last fall.

Knights Run Road in Northumberland County is anticipated to reopen to traffic in mid-March 2019, reported Virginia Department of Transportation Fredericksburg District public affairs manager Kelly Hannon.

More than 100 state-maintained roads were closed in the 14-county Fredericksburg District immediately following Tropical Storm Michael in October 2018. A total of seven roads remain closed for major reconstruction or replacement of pipes and culverts, said Hannon. Emergency procurement methods are being used to expedite repairs.

On Knights Run, crews are replacing two 60-inch drainage pipes with two 72-inch reinforced concrete drainage pipes and installing pipe headwalls. The new 72-inch pipes have been partially placed. Final construction activities will be underway over the next two weeks to fill in the area over the new pipes, grade the area and install a new travel surface.
