Lacking in numbers, LHS soccer program to focus on improvement

The Lancaster High varsity soccer team has gotten off to a 1-1 start, which includes picking up a 3-2 overtime win against Northern Neck District rival Northumberland.

The Red Devils held a 2-1 lead until the final 30 seconds of the April 10 game when Martin Smith scored on a penalty kick to send the game into extra minutes. Northumberland had broken a 0-0 lock with under 40 seconds to go in the first half to take a 1-0 into the break. But Lancaster tied the contest at 1-1 early in the second half on a goal by sophomore midfielder River Diaz. Senior defender Alex Posey had the assist.

Lancaster took a one-goal lead when senior midfielder Leyton Dew scored off a pass from sophomore midfielder Nathan Meberg.

Northumberland drew the penalty with a collision in the box in the waning seconds and after a scoreless first 5-minute overtime, Lancaster clinched the win when Dew scored on a cross….
