LANCASTER—After nearly a year of discussions and a final, sometimes tense public hearing, Lancaster supervisors on Thursday, April 24, narrowly approved changes to the waterfront overlay district to address what supporters have called unintended consequences of how the ordinance was written. Opponents said the changes would harm the surrounding waters.
The current overlay language applies to parcels within 800 feet of “tidal shores and wetlands” while the newly adopted overlay will measure within 800 feet of the “water shoreline” as defined by Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
