The Lancaster County Lions Club recently donated funds to A Fresh Start–Hygiene & Confidence Initiative.
A service project founded by Middlesex High School junior Kinsley Horn, A Fresh Start provides bags of hygiene products free to elementary, middle and high school students in need.
Horn noticed that many students quietly come to school each day without basic hygiene essentials—deodorant, soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products or toothpaste. These are necessities, not luxuries, and not having them can lead to embarrassment, isolation, missed opportunities and a loss of confidence, she said.
Lion Anna Kellum saw the bags being placed in designated locations in the schools that permit students in need to quietly take a bag without raising attention to their need. She brought Kinsley’s project to the club’s attention and members agreed the worthwhile project merited assistance, said Lion president Jim Ward. No child should have to worry about being teased because they don’t have the basic items so many folks take for granted.
