KILMARNOCK—LaNelle Mae Cross Jeffrey, 90, formerly of Richmond, passed away on Saturday, October 21, in Kilmarnock.
She was born in Richmond, on October 4, 1927. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nellie Lee Snead Cross and Walter Stanley Cross Sr.; her husband of 38 years, Clyde “Jeff” Thurston Jeffrey Sr.; and her brother, W. Stanley Cross Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandy Jordan; her son, C.T. Jeffrey Jr., and his wife, Lori.
Jeffrey graduated from John Marshall High School and from RPI with a bachelor’s in business. She began her teaching career in 1960 at Jack & Jill Kindergarten. After getting her teaching certificate from Virginia Commonwealth University, Jeffrey taught first and second grade at Ridge Elementary and then Jackson Davis Elementary until her retirement in 1987.
Jeffrey was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Richmond and more recently First United Methodist Church in Eufaula, Ala. She was a member of The Tuckahoe Woman’s Club and The Commonwealth Woman’s Club. She lived a full life, giving generously of her vibrant, yet humble spirit, her hospitality and her charming smile.
Her deep faith and love of family and the Center Cross area of the Rappahannock River inspired original compositions (lyrics and music) in her “Songs from the Heart” songbook. The family thanks caring members of Commonwealth Senior Living staff in Kilmarnock, Hospice of Virginia and dear people in Richmond and Eufaula for the gift of their love and friendship through the years.
A graveside service will be held at Westhampton Memorial Cemetery, Saturday, October 28.
