Late season winning streak leads Red Devils to baseball championship

On paper, the Red Devils did the unexpected by upsetting higher ranked Rappahannock and Essex to win the Northern Neck District baseball tournament championship last week.

But the wins weren’t that surprising to coach Scotty George, who said his and Welby Saunders’ team was peaking at just the right time.

“Season one is over with and now a new season is starting for us,” said George. “That’s how we’re looking at it. We’ve had goals all year and we’re meeting them.”

Lancaster got off to a 7-6 start—losing to both Rappahannock and Essex in the first run through district play—before going on an eight-game winning streak that included a 5-3 district semifinal win over the Raiders and a 6-2 win over the Trojans in the final.
