LHS football team wins state Sportsmanship Award

The Lancaster High School varsity football team, its coaches and fans have been recognized for good sportsmanship during the fall 2023 season.

LHS head coach Landon Gouveia and assistant Andrew Wylie attended the February 12 All Metro Awards Dinner, hosted by The Touchdown Club of Richmond, where they were presented The George Gasser Sportsmanship Award for Class 1-3 schools statewide.

“We’re very proud of this as a staff,” said Gouveia, who led the Red Devils to a 7-5 record as a Region 1A semifinalist for Lancaster’s best finish in nine years. While aiming for a successful season, Gouveia and his staff also promoted sportsmanship and character-building. “We wanted good kids that were doing the right things,” he said.

Their efforts did not go unnoticed. Following every game, the officials would give each team a score based on the sportsmanship performance of….
