LHS indoor track teams are expected to improve weekly

The Lancaster High School boys indoor track team is coming off a state championship season. But coach Draper Washington is realistic about his young, inexperienced team this year, saying the goal is to show gradual improvement on the road to the postseason.

“We graduated a lot,” said Washington, who has four state championships to his credit including one indoor Class 1 title and three state outdoor trophies. The team only returns two from last year’s Virginia High School League championship team, senior Porter Pittman and junior William Ball. “All of our other kids are brand new, so there’s no expectations other than them getting better each week,” he said.
Indoor track meets can be very overwhelming and intimidating, added Washington. “Sometimes there’s 1500 kids and can be up to 2500 or 3000 kids in a gym….
