LHS place eighth in state wrestling tournament

Lancaster High School had five wrestlers medal and finished among the top 10 in team scoring at the Virginia High School League Class 1 wrestling championships February 18-19 in Salem.

The Red Devils qualified eight wrestlers for the state tournament with five advancing to the medal round on the second day of the two-day tournament at Salem Civic Center. Three wrestlers placed fourth to help the Devils score 74.5 points for eighth place overall.

Wrestling powerhouse Grundy scored 303.5 points as the Class 1 state champion and Rural Retreat was the runner-up with 205 points.

Mathews scored 60.5 to place ninth and Middlesex scored 47 to finish 12th. Wrestlers from 26 teams competed in Class 1.
