BALTIMORE, MD—Luther Oatman Nickens, 87, of Baltimore died May 27, 2024, after a long illness.
Luther was born April 27, 1937, in Rehobeth Church to the late Eva Gertrude Carter Nickens and Elzie Leroy Nickens Sr.
Luther was educated in Northumberland County schools and attended Julius Rosenwald High School. He moved to Baltimore, then to New York and returned to Baltimore. He lived in New York for 47 years, where he owned a trucking company. In later years, he moved to Parkville Senior Center.
He was a member of the Mt. Olive Helping Hand Club of Baltimore and the Masons of New York City.
Luther was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Ann Pollard Nickens; his parents; sisters, Muriel Carter, Annie Sutton and Frances Steptoe; brothers, Leroy Nickens, Savington Nickens and Richard Nickens.
He is survived by his sister, Sarah Curry.
A wake was held at 2 p.m. and a funeral at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Heathsville. Interment followed in the Mt. Olive Cemetery and family and friends shared a fellowship meal in the Mt. Olive Baptist Fellowship Hall after the interment.
