CALLAO—Lynn York, 87, of Callao, passed on September 24, 2024, with her beloved husband by her side.
Lynn was born in Coronado, California, and as the daughter of a naval officer, she lived all over the country, returning to Coronado in time to finish high school. After earning a bachelor’s in social work from San Diego State University, Lynn went on to dedicate her career to helping those in need.
In 1959 she married naval officer Howard York in Norfolk. Frequent moves afforded Lynn the opportunity to work in a variety of social service roles in multiple states and overseas. Upon retirement to the Northern Neck in 1998, Lynn continued her work through volunteering with Meals on Wheels and Reading Partners.
Lynn was a member of Light of Christ Anglican Church in Heathsville. She enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, sewing, reading, bird watching and playing mahjong. She loved being on the water and sailed the Chesapeake and its’ tributaries with her husband and children.
Lynn was preceded in death by her mother, Jeanne Richards; father, retired U.S. Navy Capt. William Richards; and stepmother, Maureen Richards.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, retired U.S. Navy Commander Howard York; son, James York (Diana); daughter, Diane Baltins (Arnis); and grandchildren, Laura York and Emma Volmer (Rock).
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 11, at Light of Christ Anglican Church, Heathsville.
