Margaret Jean “Maggie” Stewart Gilman

WEEMS—Margaret Jean “Maggie” Stewart Gilman, 75, died December 23, 2022. She was born November 4, 1947, in New York City, the daughter of Robert McLean Stewart and Ruby Maud Moorman Stewart.

Maggie graduated from the Foxcroft School and Rhode Island School of Design. She worked as a graphic design artist in New York before her marriage to Frederick M. Gilman.

Maggie and Fred shared many days on their beloved yacht, Butterfly, cruising the east coast, the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands. Their shared loved of sailing and their search for a home port brought Maggie and Fred to Lancaster County in 1985 where they soon opened the White Stone Wine and Cheese. With an anchor tucked into a safe harbor, Maggie and Fred took their exploration landward, riding many open roads throughout the country on their Harley Davidsons.

Adding to her resume, Maggie was an accomplished horsewoman, award-winning photographer, incredible mother, talented cook and gracious hostess who will be forever in the hearts of her friends and family.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Fred Gilman; children, Alexandra, Mark, Aimee and Emmet; and granddaughter, Katelyn. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Stewart; and her cousins, Robert, Tom, Frank, Charles, John and Bruce Puffer and their families. She will be sorely missed by her beloved dogs, Logan and Sadie.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 28, at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Donations may be made to the Animal Welfare League, P.O. Box 975, White Stone, VA 22578

“Happy Trails to you, until we meet again.”
