WAYNESBORO—Margaret Katherine Lee “Kate” Fowlkes of Waynesboro died at the age of 42 on September 2, 2021.

Kate was born July 17, 1979, in Roanoke to James and Twila Lee but grew up in Kilmarnock. She graduated as an honor student from Lancaster High School in 1997 and also with honors from Longwood University in 2002. She married that same year and started a family.

In 2007, Kate pursued a career in social work. She excelled in relating to and helping families in crisis.

Kate never outgrew playing dress-up. She never missed an opportunity to get dressed-up, put on makeup and fix her hair. She loved jewelry and clothes, but hated doing laundry. She loved to laugh, play poker, and spend other peoples’ money.  She was brilliant and witty with a wonderful sense of humor. Kate was easy to love and hard to stay upset with.

We love Kate and we miss her. God love her, embrace her and welcome her.

Kate is survived by her children, Helen Elizabeth and Jacob Ryan Fowlkes of Blacksburg; her parents, James and Twila Lee of Kilmarnock; sister, Kelley Lee McLean (Price), their children Tyler (Hannah), Keegan, Caleb, Liam and Harper of Richmond; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

After cremation, her family will hold a private service. In memory of Kate’s life, enjoy a glass of wine, tell a joke, hug a friend and perform an act of kindness.

If Kate could add to this, she would say, “That’s a true story.”
