Mary Anne Duffy Jacobs

WHITE STONEMary Anne Duffy Jacobs, 77, of White Stone, formerly of Richmond, passed away on October 9, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joseph B. and Mary Duffy.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Hunter L. Jacobs; a sister, Jacqueline DeFrancesco of Mt. Carmel, Pa.; and a brother, Frank Duffy of Sunbury, Pa.

Mary was born on September 10, 1945 in Pottsville, Pa., and grew up in Centralia, Pa., attending Mt. Carmel High School. Consistent with Mary’s desire to help others, she chose a career in nursing, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s.

It was at the university that she met her future husband and they were married in Centralia on August 10, 1968. After Hunter completed his military service in 1972 the couple moved to Richmond and Mary went to work for the U.S. Veterans Administration at the McGuire VA Hospital. While at McGuire, Mary earned her doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia/VCU and went on to have a successful 30-year career with the VA.

Upon her retirement, Mary made her home in White Stone on the banks of the Rappahannock River. During her retirement Mary devoted much of her time to supporting the mission of the Animal Welfare League, Garfield’s Rescue and Cat Cove Inc. She could be seen every day, regardless of the weather, tending to the homeless cats she befriended and supported.

Mary was a member of the Rappahannock Garden Club in White Stone and the Church of the Visitation in Topping.

A Mass will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, at Church of The Visitation, 8462 General Puller Highway, Topping. Interment will be held at Historic Christ Church Burying Grounds.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to her caregivers at Hospice of Virginia and to Ms. Tamara Moody. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Cat Cove Inc. at
