Mary Louise H. Crowther

Mary Louise H. Crowther

BEVERLYVILLE—Mary Louise Hinton Crowther, 95, died February 19, 2026, in her home surrounded by family. She was born in the home, Bruington, and spent her entire life there raising her family, tending the farm and running the family business.

Mary Lou was married to her lifelong sweetheart who preceded her, R. Prosser Crowther, for 68 years. She is survived by five children, their spouses, and grandchildren, whom she cherished. Her children, Virginia Louise Crowther Ritter (Jack Hanbery), R. Prosser Crowther Jr. (Jane Headley), Elizabeth Hinton “Sissy” Crowther, William A. Crowther (Cheryl Wimbish, deceased) and Richard Hinton Crowther; her grandchildren, Brooke Crowther Kessler, R. Prosser Crowther III, Carrie Elizabeth Lee Somers (William) and Katherine Louise Barrack (Nick); her great-grandchildren, Aria Kessler, Julian James Kessler, Owen Somers and Hinton Barrack; and her daughter-in-law, Jane B. Crowther, who will miss her deeply. Her sister, Anna Lee Hinton Fetter, pre-deceased her.

Mary Lou was the cherished daughter of Richard H. Hinton and Louise Johnson Hinton. She grew up on the family farm playing outside, enjoying friends and animals. Her favorite childhood pastimes were playing baseball in the barnyard, running outright and riding her bicycle to Reedville to play with friends. She loved animals and always cherished her dogs, cats and orphan calves. She loved to go to the family business, Lilian Lumber Company, on the Great Wicomico with her father, where she spent days on the water and watching the men work.

She was a splendid athlete and fierce competitor. God help anyone who played against her in croquet or dominos! Her moves were swift and sometimes baffling. Mary Lou graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock (1948) where she excelled at field hockey and other sports and as Grey Team Captain. She also wielded a formidable stick at Averett College, where she majored in physical education. Mary Lou attended Pan American Business School, where she learned skills she used to support and transform Lilian Lumber Company, in partnership with her father, husband, son Bill, and granddaughter Katie.

Mary Lou was a dedicated St. Margaret’s alumna and supporter. She received the Distinguished Alumna Award in 2023 for her life achievements, which include vice presidency of Lilian Lumber Company, volunteer for both the American Cancer Society and American Red Cross, member of the Women’s Club of Northumberland County and fundraiser for Rappahannock General Hospital-Bon Secours Mercy.

Mary Lou had the good fortune to be in love with her life partner for seven decades. Their relationship produced a solid family, an enterprise that brings benefit to the community and a legacy of good ethics and leadership. They enjoyed renovating her family home place over the years, spending time with their friends and taking many fun trips in their boat. From their home near Smith Point, they took family and friends on many weekend trips on the Chesapeake Bay. A highlight was going to New York Harbor for the Bicentennial celebration with their friends Wendell and Anne Winters Haynie. Her friends were always hugely important to her, and she had many.  She suffered no fools, but was determined all activities would be fun.

Mary Lou was an exceptional family matriarch whose influence will guide family members and those touched by her for many years.  She acquired new friends easily and loved young people. A beautiful person physically and spiritually, she attracted people and had a positive effect on them. Her family and friends will miss her achingly.
