Master Gardeners share the Secret Language of Flowers

The scent of herbs and flowers recently filled the air as an audience of youngsters filled the Lancaster Community Library meeting room.

Northern Neck Extension Master Gardener Jane Barnes presented, “A Journey into the Secret Language of Flowers,” a talk she prepared for teens as a part of the LCL Summer Reading Program. She shared information about floriography, which is assigning symbolic meaning to flowers based on their color, the type of flower, or both.

Topics included the most popular flowers and their meanings and the symbolism in state flowers. Participants learned how people throughout history have used flowers to communicate messages to one another, an especially popular pastime in the Victorian Era.
