Nancy E. Johannes

Nancy E. Johannes

IRVINGTON—Nancy Eleanor Johannes, 78, of Irvington passed away peacefully on January 26, 2020.

She is survived by her children, Mary Summers of Annapolis, Md., and Stephen Johannes of Ashburn; her brother, Charles Fulton of Phoenixville, Pa.; beloved grandchildren Caroline Summers, Paul Summers IV, Shannon Johannes and Sean Johannes; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Johannes; and parents, Clifford Fulton and Frances Byars Fulton.

Nancy was blessed with a deep spiritual faith, remarkable generosity and caring, and devotion to family and friends throughout her life. She was born on October 11, 1941, in Cheverly Md., and raised in nearby Takoma Park, Md. She graduated from Mars Hill University and became an elementary school teacher in Annapolis.

After marrying Paul in 1965, Nancy created many happy memories as a devoted wife and mother raising her children in Harwood, Md. In retirement, Nancy and Paul moved to Irvington and developed many deep and valued friendships. She loved and cared for everyone, sharing her devout Christian love of God, faith and charity with others.

Nancy was a prolific letter writer to friends and family, and those handwritten notes and letters are cherished. All who knew her were touched by her faith, her kindness and her generous spirit. She loved doting on her grandchildren, volunteering for church and charities, cooking for family and friends, bird watching and long walks outdoors.

She was a faithful member of the Irvington Baptist Church, where she was a teacher for the ladies Bible class, a member of the choir, a member of the ladies mission group and served on both the youth committee and house and social committee. Along with her dedication to her church, she had a true passion for the Interfaith Service Council, The Haven and the local Hispanic ministry.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 31, at Irvington Baptist Church, 53 King Carter Drive, Irvington. The family will receive guests starting at noon and a reception will follow after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 4550 Montgomery Avenue, Suite 1100N, Bethesda, MD 20814; Irvington Baptist Church, PO Box 417, Irvington, VA 22480; or to a charity of your choice.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
