KILMARNOCK—Nancy Haydon Hughes, 90, of Kilmarnock passed away on September 24, 2026. She was the only child of James and Myrtle Haydon who predeceased her.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Barnes Hughes; and her son, Robert Hughes Jr.
Nancy grew up in Kilmarnock and graduated from Kilmarnock High School. She attended Longwood College, Tidewater Community College and graduated from Smithfield Massey Business College.
Those who knew Nancy will remember her as a quiet, giving person who was always putting others ahead of herself. Nancy loved to cook and share food with others. Nancy loved Christmas and made hundreds of cookies and cakes each year to give to family and friends. She was always doing things for others that people were not aware of.
She had a passion for sending cards in remembrance of birthdays, anniversaries and all the holidays. Nancy also sent get-well cards and cards just to say hello and thinking of you to family and friends who needed some encouragement.
Nancy was a cat person who always had at least two cats. She frequently gave of her time and money to the local Animal Welfare League. She leaves behind her two cats Phoebe and Abby.
Nancy, after working for many years, was a retired legal assistant. She was a 70-plus year member of the Eastern Star and was a past matron of King Carter #5065. During the Grand Chapter Session of 1981-82, she was selected by a Grand Officer to be a personal Grand Page, which she enjoyed very much.
She had a lot of very good friends and is survived by a number of devoted first cousins. Two very special ones who have stood by her in her later years are Judy Crowther Miller and Virginia Garland Smith. She also had two very devoted, loving caretakers, Carol Best Hadley and Cora Conway, who were like members of the family.
A funeral and celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at Warsaw United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Family and the church family will host a reception after the funeral. Interment will be private.
