HEATHSVILLE—Residents and visitors will have a new place to access the Great Wicomico River after the Northumberland board of supervisors on September 9 unanimously approved a launch site on land owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) underneath the Tipers Bridge and next to the public fishing pier.
The rustic launch will include a simple gravel drive with a turnaround to allow the drop off of kayaks or canoes. Parking will be allowed in the lot and hours will be the same as the pier, which is sunup to sundown.
County planner Stuart McKenzie estimated it will cost $8,000 to $10,000 to clean brush and add gravel. County funds will not be used.
