Northumberland defeats Lancaster, 72-65, on way to winning the region championship

Northumberland won the first round with a one-two punch in the first quarter to take a big lead into the half but Lancaster refused to go down without a fight in the Region 1A boys basketball semifinals on Friday, February 27.

The Red Devils clawed their way back from a 16-point deficit and took a brief lead before the Indians claimed the regional win, 72-65, in Claraville.

Northumberland, the region’s top-ranked team at 18-3 overall, went on to beat the second-seed Yellow Jackets of Northampton, 82-57, on Saturday, February 28, to win the region championship and earn a home berth in this week’s Class 1 state tournament.

Rappahannock County eliminated Northumberland, 62-60, at King George High School on Tuesday…
