Northumberland establishes joint committee to tackle school finances

HEATHSVILLE—At a special meeting of the Northumberland board of supervisors and school board on Wednesday, August 2, both boards agreed to establish a joint finance committee to address school finances and related concerns.

The committee will include two members from each board, the county administrator, the school superintendent and two citizens. One citizen will be chosen by each board.

The move followed a unanimous vote from the school board requesting supervisors remove the categorical appropriations from the school budget. Making the motion, school board member Denise Mazyck cited delays by supervisors in making necessary transfers so that all school employees could receive a 5% raise to match those received by other county employees. Mazyck said, “All this disruption and confusion could have been avoided” if the school board had the ability “to transfer already appropriated funds.”

Supervisor James Brann said, “Issues still need to be resolved” before he could vote….
