HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland board of supervisors, planning commission, and economic development commission (EDC) all met on Thursday, January 18, to discuss how to best ensure the future economic vitality of the county as the EDC begins work on a county economic development plan, last updated in 2020 for years 2015-2021.
EDC chairman Karen Pica, PhD, told the board and commission members the EDC had previously reviewed the county’s comprehensive plan—last updated in 2016—as well as the Northern Neck Planning District Commission’s (NNPDC) Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. That plan includes Northumberland, Lancaster, Richmond and Westmoreland counties and was last updated in January 2022.
The board of supervisors “has charged us with increasing employers, employees and tourists. We have all that good information, we have history, but we’d like to get a sense from the planning commission and the board of supervisors where you see the county in 2030, so that we can make appropriate economic development considerations, partnerships and action items….
