A special election has been called for November 3 following the resignation of Northumberland school board chairman David Curran prior to the board’s July meeting. The term for the District 5 seat ends December 31, 2027. According to the Virginia Department of Elections, in order to be included on the ballot, candidates must file all necessary paperwork with the general registrar by 5 p.m. Friday, August 14.
CLARAVILLE—On Monday, August 10, superintendent Karen Leslie informed Northumberland school board members that some students got a bit of a head-start on the academic year which began Wednesday, August 12.
Through Northumberland’s “New Beginnings” program, students entering transitional grade levels, including pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade, were set to attend school for a half day Tuesday, August 11, to become familiar with their new buildings for a successful first full day of school, said Leslie.
In other news, acting school board chairman Cheryl Davis moved to appoint board member Carolyn Crockett to serve as vice chairman. Dana O’Bier, Betty Christopher, Davis and Crockett voted in favor of the motion and it passed, 4-0.
The reorganization of the board is due to former chairman Dave Curran’s recent resignation from the school board. The deadline to file for the vacant District Five school board seat is Friday, August 14.
