Northumberland school officials review audit recommendations and SOL scores

HEATHSVILLE—With the academic session in full swing, Northumberland County Public Schools is reflecting on the previous years and implementing strategies to improve and grow.

Superintendent Dr. Holly Wargo on Monday, September 9, summarized the school activity funds for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, provided by Robinson, Farmer, Cox (RFC) Associates Certified Public Accountants.

In the audit, RFC noted several weak points in handling of funds.

“Due to the nature of school activity funds, there is an inherent risk of misappropriation of assets associated with the lack of segregation of duties over the accounts, records and financial reporting,” the report read.

Wargo noted the auditors stated that although the risk exists, the costs of segregating the duties would likely outweigh the benefits. The opinion continued to recommend that those charged with governance and management implement review procedures and additional monitoring….
