Northumberland schools accredited under new standards

LOTTSBURG—All three schools in Northumberland County have been accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.

“I am extremely proud of the hard work of our teachers, support staff and students. It takes everyone working together to create positive student outcomes,” said superintendent Dr. Holly Wargo.

She said the full accreditation of NCPS schools was the result of a combined effort by teachers to build relationships with students and families and to tailor instruction to meet individual student needs.

The district used a multi-prong approach to improving the schools which included the funding of four full day pre-kindergarten programs to immerse four year olds in early literacy and social skills development, fully implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, and partnering with local churches, community organizations and after-school programs to provide services to students, she said.

The accreditation standards for Virginia schools were recently revised by the State Board of Education. The updated standards provide equal credit for students who pass standardized tests and students who make significant annual progress towards meeting expectations in English and math…
