Orchid walks set for Chilton Woods

The Northern Neck Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society on Thursday and Sunday, May 3 and 6, will offer walks for members and the public to see orchids and other spring-blooming wildflowers in Chilton Woods, a Virginia State Forest on Field Trial Road in Lancaster County.

“We will especially be looking for some delicate showy orchis which bloom along with the pink lady slipper at this time of year,” said president Kevin Howe. “This is the best pine-hardwoods forest in the Northern Neck and perhaps even Virginia, for viewing a diversity of flowering orchids from spring through fall.”

The walk will be about a mile on a dirt trail, said Howe.  Bring sturdy shoes or boots, bug repellent, water and camera.
