Pools are normally a welcome sight this time of year, except when they are holding up traffic on the Robert O. Norris Jr. Memorial Bridge. According to the Virginia State Police, on Friday, June 5, at approximately 9:17 a.m. troopers responded to a crash on the bridge involving a pick-up truck transporting a pool from the White Stone side.
“It struck several cars and caused delays while the Virginia Department of Transportation worked to clean up the scene,” said Sgt Jessica Shehan, public information officer. “There were no reported injuries, just superficial damage to the vehicles involved.”
According to Virginia Department of Transportation communications manager Kelly Hannon, the incident stopped traffic on the bridge in both directions for approximately an hour. “Signs are posted along Route 3 in Lancaster and Middlesex leading up to the bridge warning travelers that there is a 10-foot vehicle width restriction on Norris Bridge. The pool basin was 16 feet wide,” said Hannon.
The crash remains under investigation. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, White Stone Police Department and White Stone Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
