Priscilla E. ‘Pat’ Steger

KILMARNOCK—Priscilla Ellen “Pat” Steger, 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at her home in Kilmarnock.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Willie Anne Gardner formerly of Tidewater; and her sister, Suzanne Fleet of Irvington.

Pat grew up on Rivermont Farm in Tidewater on the Northern Neck. She often spoke of growing up in a home among grandparents and parents and how she loved her role as a farmer’s daughter. As a child she was usually found outdoors and among her fondest memories are those spent fishing and crabbing at Suggett’s Point along the shores of the Rappahannock River.

Pat graduated from Farnham High School where she played softball, an activity that followed her into her adult years.

She lived briefly in Richmond but soon moved to Washington suburbs where she began a career with the Department of the Navy that began as a typist. Thirty-two years later she retired in management as an imagery analyst. During those years she became a valued resource and was described as “passionate” in her job and loyal to the many friends she developed while she was working. A favorite benefit of her job with the Navy were opportunities for travel both in the country and abroad.

After retiring, Pat moved to Wilmington, N.C., where she actively pursued her love of golf-highlighted by two holes in one. When she was unable to be outdoors playing golf or gardening, Pat could always be found reading a book.

Desiring to be closer to family and friends and her beloved Rappahannock River, Pat returned to the Northern Neck several years ago where she settled in Kilmarnock.

Describing Pat, a long time friend said, “While some might call her a tough lady, who was never at a loss for words or lacking an opinion, all will remember her for the soft and caring heart always so apparent beneath her tenacious exterior.”

Pat is survived by her daughter, Michele and son-in-law, Lance Buell; granddaughters, Nicole Phillips (Ernest) and Kelsey Buell; and two great grandchildren, Camran Oglesby and Joseph Phillips.

A celebration of Pat’s life was held January 21 at her church, Irvington Baptist, Irvington. Family received friends during a reception which followed the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Pat’s name to Irvington Baptist Church, P. O. Box 417, Irvington, VA 22480.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
