LOTTSBURG—Retired Brigadier General John Thomas Powers, 80, died peacefully on May 24, 2018, surrounded by his family.

John was survived by his son, William “Bill” Powers of Lottsburg; and his daughter, Lynn Ferguson and her husband, Jack, of Lowell, Mass. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Reeves, Richard Powers, Florence St. George and Thomas Powers.

John was a long-time resident of Lottsburg, formerly of Dorchester, Mass. He enjoyed a very long distinguished career serving in the U.S. Army and the discipline and patriotism he learned while serving his country never left him, as friends and family will attest.

He was an active member of the Light of Christ Anglican Church and enjoyed cooking many meals (and cookies) for his church family alongside his son, Bill. He took great pride in his participation with the Kairos ministry. He loved woodworking and fishing. He loved to talk to people and share his many stories. He will be missed significantly.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Light of Christ Anglican Church, 9500 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.

A funeral will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
