Northumberland High School is riding an 11-game winning streak into the Class 1 state baseball tournament this week.
The Indians beat West Point, 7-5, in the Region A championship at Dream Fields in Kilmarnock last Friday to earn a home berth against Central Lunenburg in the state quarterfinal game. West Point also advanced to the state playoffs and played Riverheads in Staunton. Both quarterfinal games were scheduled for June 5.
Zach Swift and Nick Basye delivered the one-two punch against West Point. Swift started on the mound and came out with the score tied after four-and-two-thirds innings. Basye threw the final two-and-a-third innings for the win.
Collin Saunders threw a complete game for the regional semifinal win over Essex, 2-1, last Wednesday.
The state semifinal and final will be June 8-9 at Radford University.
