Richard W. “Rick” Gilbert

ELIZABETH CITY, NC—Richard Wesley “Rick” Gilbert, a beloved husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on October 15, 2024, at the age of 71.

Born on June 26, 1953, in Fairfield, California, Richard lived a life filled with love, music and service to others.

Richard was a devoted husband to Sandra Swain Gilbert and together they shared many happy years. He was a wonderful and loving father, known for his close relationship with his daughter, Lucy Gilbert. He also cherished his stepchildren, Amanda Hampton and Christian Willadson, treating them as his own.

A longtime resident of the Northern Neck, Richard retired to Elizabeth City, where he continued to enrich the lives of those around him. He was a Recovery Team Leader, respected for his dedication and willingness to help anyone in need. Richard’s generous spirit extended beyond his work; he was always ready to lend a hand or offer support to those who needed it.

Music was one of Richard’s great passions. As a talented musician and songwriter, he brought joy to many through his compositions and performances. His love for music was paralleled only by his love for his faithful dog, Reba, who was his constant companion.

Richard attended Forerunner Church, where he found spiritual fellowship and community. His faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him through times of joy and sorrow.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Gilbert and Barbara Wallace.

He leaves behind a loving family, including his sister, Anne Kelly; stepsister, Shirley Tipton; stepbrothers, Robert Thompson and Rick Thompson; and his stepmother, Shirley Gilbert; and two granddaughters. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

In honoring Richard’s life, a Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. November 10. Family and friends can gather to remember the man who touched so many hearts. For further details, contact Sandra Gilbert or Lucy Gilbert.

Richard W. Gilbert will be remembered for his boundless generosity, his musical talents and the warmth he brought to those around him. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
