Saunders named region baseball player of the year

Lancaster High School senior shortstop Creston Saunders earned his second player of the year honor last week when he was named Region 1A baseball Most Valuable Player. Saunders also is the Northern Neck District player of the year.

Rappahannock High coach Jim Bieger who led the Raiders to the Class 1 state championship, was selected by peers as the region coach of the year. RHS won its fifth baseball championship with a walk-off 6-5 win over Chilhowie on June 8 in Salem. The Raiders placed five on the all-region first team.

Saunders, who helped Lancaster reach the state semifinals, was a menace on the bases this year with 39 stolen bases. With a .492 batting average, he had 32 hits including….
