The girls basketball Class 1 state quarterfinalist Essex Trojans placed three on the All-Region A first team and captured the two top spots. Senior Jaylah Mercer was named regional player of the year and Jonathan Mercer, coach of the year.
The Trojans’ undefeated stretch came to an end last week with a 56-52 state playoff loss to Brunswick. Essex finished the year at 23-1 as the Northern Neck District and Region 1A tournament champions.
Mercer also filled one spot on the all-region first team along with teammates sophomore Morgan Self and senior Keimare Gray.
Westmoreland, which also advanced to the state tournament as the region runner-up placed junior Janaya Moore on the first team and senior Laylah Clarke on the second team.
Rappahannock sophomore Solai Coleman was named to the first team, while Lancaster junior Amarreona Ball and Colonial Beach freshman Jocelyn McGinniss made the second-team cut.
Others named to the first team were King & Queen junior Amelia Moaney, Charles City sophomore Jaela Smith and West Point sophomore Krishay Delany.
The second team also included King & Queen junior Janiya Brown and senior Alyiah Riley; Chincoteague juniors Allison Clarke and Olivia Mason, and Charles City senior Nyla Brown.
