Virginia’s River Realm will celebrate the Virginia oyster with Shuckapalooza from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 12.
Participants may explore Virginia’s River Realm with a self-paced tour featuring seven behind the scenes, oyster-centric venues along the Rappahannock River shoreline.
“This innovative event is the perfect way for oyster aficionados to experience the authentic lifestyle of the communities of the Rappahannock River,” said Susan Cockrell of Virginia’s River Realm.
The Shuckapalooza ticket is a one-day pass to the region’s oyster scene, she said. Check out private oyster farms, harvest methods, ecology, samplings of oysters, plus wine and beer pairings. Taste and learn from the local experts including master chefs, conservationists, winemakers, oyster farmers and local watermen that have been harvesting native oysters for countless decades.
The event is hosted by Virginia’s River Realm and partner, Friends of the Rappahannock.
“We are proud to be working with so many great partners to protect and restore the Rappahannock oyster and showcase their essential role in a healthy and sustainable Rappahannock River,” said Kathleen Harrigan, executive director of Friends of the Rappahannock.
Venues will include Rappahannock Oyster Company, Christchurch School Oyster Program, Urbanna Seafood Market and Raw Bar, The Tides, Dog and Oyster Vineyard, Willaby’s Beach with a watermen’s perspective from Miss Mary Seafood and HPP of Virginia.
