Skipjack Claud W. Somers refit begins

In the first step toward a total refit of the historic skipjack Claud W. Somers, volunteer crew members removed the mainsail and jib Saturday, November 8. The vessel, built in 1911, has been owned by the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum for 25 years.

Sails are a skipjack’s only means of self-propulsion, reported museum public relations volunteer Tina McCloud. In early December the skipjack’s push boat, which has an engine, will guide the Somers to Jennings….
