Skunk Cabbage New Year’s Walk slated Sunday at Hickory Hollow

For many years, the Northern Neck Virginia Native Plant Society has held a New Year’s Day walk on January 1 but this year it will be held on Sunday, January 4.

The reason is that Belle Isle State Park has a First Day Walk that in past years was held earlier in the day. But this year the park schedule is 1 p.m. and is in direct conflict with the society’s walk. Both are great events and conflicts are not, so the Hickory Hollow Skunk Cabbage New Year’s Walk has shifted to 1 p.m. Sunday, January 4.

This event is a great way to get nature loving people out at the beginning of the year to see Virginia’s earliest blooming native plant, skunk cabbage. And the walk takes place in one of the Northern Neck’s best natural areas, Hickory Hollow Natural Area Preserve off Regina Road, near Lancaster.
