South Main is transitioning to commercial

KILMARNOCK—South Main Street continues to evolve into a commercial district following a rezoning hearing Monday, August 12, at a planning commission meeting.

The commission held a public hearing for a rezoning application submitted by Grace Episcopal Church Trustees to rezone 229 South Main Street from single-family residential (R1) to medium density residential (R2). The structure, at Roseneath Avenue and South Main Street, is a single-family brick home.

According to applicant Art Gilbert, the home had previously been rented to several individuals and families, but has been vacant the last several months.

Gilbert said the purpose of rezoning the property would be to allow for more flexibility of use with the building. While they still may rent out the property, they would like to have the option of using the property as office space….
