Students in grades 1-3 at Lancaster Elementary School (LES) recently received free books, courtesy of The Literacy Project.
According to principal Keegan Walters, the group of volunteers, in combination with the Northern Neck Family YMCA and Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck, worked with LES lead teachers to determine high-interest books for students. The students were then able to browse the selections and choose up to three books to add to their home libraries.
Books ranged in level so teachers could help students select ones appropriate to them while also steering them towards a challenge, said Walters. This emphasis on growing a student’s home library is based on the idea that access to text improves a student’s vocabulary and exposure to text, strengthening their academic outcomes.
