Summer sandlot league opens play Monday on two diamonds

Area baseball fans missing their favorite sport can soon get their fix. A new summer baseball league, including seven teams of up-and-coming area high school players, will begin play Monday, July 6.

Games will be played at Dream Fields, 1385 Irvington Road, Kilmarnock, and Deltaville Ballpark, 100 Ball Park Road, Deltaville.

The schedule includes 43 games and extends through August 14.

Lancaster High School assistant coaches William Saunders and Bruce Northern will coach Lancaster Navy, which opens play at home at 7 p.m. at Dream Fields, Monday, July 6, against Northumberland Air Force.

The teams are named after branches of the Armed Forces. Middlesex County has two teams, including the Middlesex Army and Middlesex Marines. They open the season against each other at 7 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Deltaville Ballpark.

Other teams include Gloucester Coast Guard, Mathews National Guard and Rappahannock Space Force. The league was organized by Joey Fitchett of Middlesex.
