Supervisors plan appeal to state on behalf of menhaden fishery

UPDATE: county administrator Luttrell Tadlock early Wednesday, February 18, indicated the meeting with Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources David Bulova and Deputy Secretary Adrienne Kotula was “cancelled as they needed to clear their schedule today.” Tadlock said they would try to reschedule.

HEATHSVILLE—Members of the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, February 18, planned to meet with Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources David Bulova and Deputy Secretary Adrienne Kotula to stress the importance of the menhaden reduction fishery to the people and economy of the county and share concerns regarding related legislation in the General Assembly with the potential to harm both.

Two bills were introduced by Del. Betsy Carr this session—House Bills 1048 and 1049—that would directly affect the menhaden fishery. House Bill 1048 would have prohibited purse seine menhaden reduction fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries until….
