IRVINGTON—Irvington Town Council members on March 9 continued to discuss the merits of a meals tax.
Judy Penniman and Gabe del Rio both expressed support for a meals tax, stating it would provide more income and diversify revenue streams. Penniman noted her support is on the stipulation that revenues from the tax go towards capital improvements. Ideally, revenues would be allocated to sidewalks first and then potentially sewer if the town opted to endorse town sewer, she said.
She additionally suggested that with the implementation of a meals tax, consideration should be given to reducing real estate taxes.
del Rio agreed with several of Penniman’s remarks, saying it may be beneficial to cut the property tax in half for up to two years and then reevaluate where the financials stand. He noted revenues from a meals tax should go towards sewer….
